A missionary to Japan, Martha Mensendiek, will speak at the Church of the Holy Cross at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Titled “A Dwelling in Our Hearts,” her sermon will address what it is to be “in mission,” sharing how the Christian church has accompanied people who have suffered after the disaster in Japan and how the church ministers to the people on the margins of society. Her scriptural text is Ephesians 2:14-22.
After the service, the church is holding its annual picnic with bento lunch, games and fun for all ages.
Mensendiek teaches social welfare at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, a Christian university which has a history of being in solidarity with the poor and discriminated classes in Japanese society.
She is a member of the Church of the Crossroads in Honolulu.
Besides bringing the sermon on Sunday, Mensendiek will have a busy Monday. The Church’s Board of Stewardship &Mission is sponsoring a brown bag lunch to discuss possible mission projects at 11:30 a.m. and she will be leading Bible study at 6:30 p.m.
